![]() ![]() Now he's probably going to go complain about cancel culture.īut there is comedy that people laugh at because they like that it's mean. Some guys would love his "jokes" but this was not the crowd. The line between comedy and being an asshole is "where's the joke? WHY is this supposed to be funny?" and if it comes across like the comedian is saying something fucked up but actually means what they're saying, that's when it's not funny if you're of a certain sensibility. That's when you lose a certain type a crowd. So as he went on the crowd's like "oh, he really thinks this is funny, there's no joke, he's being genuine." He went on to say "every single woman my age or older (28) is a whore or a fat slob." and there's no punch line. He thought what he was saying was funny, but he wasn't joking in the sense of "Hey I'm not really like this, I'm just being ridiculous." At least, that was NOT the vibe he put off. At first I gave him the benefit of the doubt thinking "OK he's doing a parody of this kind of comedian" but he kept going and it didn't seem like he was actually joking. I actually just saw a dude at an open mic tonight and he was saying some pretty ridiculous shit about "why can't I fuck 18 year olds? My fetish is tight pussy" and this was in a super hippie neighborhood with mostly women comics tonight. ![]() I can agree with you about how if it's grossly offensive it's not comedy, in a way. And second, I don't spend my time thinking about whether they're punching down, but rather how I would like to jab back, and that goes into my materials. ![]() First, I'm even more exasperated by "nice jokes" by men who then think I'm suddenly going to be impressed. People make jokes about women that offend me as a woman, and frankly I've gotten my fair share of infuriating remarks about Indians, but, well, two things. I'm all about adding, but very little about subtracting. I mean he could have shut Tough Crowd down for offensive comments toward the black community, but instead he let everyone talk, and then he retorted in a way that made him the show's biggest and most beloved star. I think of Patrice O'Neal as being the epitome of this ideal. It's being inclusive to give that person an ability to joke back, and to encourage them to do so. It's not being inclusive to say you can't make a joke about someone. And even better than calling them out, is jabbing back. You are right that the trans jokes going around nowadays are lazy and ideologically motivated, and they should be called out as such. I mean look at Trump, even, probably the least marginalized person in the world, and people even got sick of the jokes aimed at him because they were eventually nothing but lazy and ideological. And that's honestly true regardless of whether the person is marginalized or not. ![]() That's all very different from being offensive. Comedy isn't punching, and that also means that if you are actually punching, you're doing it wrong. I think the bigger issue is that comedy, if its goal is to hurt or to push an ideology, is not comedy.
